016 Sagittal Plane

  • Also referred to as the anteroposterior or AP plane.

  • It bisects the body from front to back, dividing it into right and left symmetrical halves. You may want to memorize that the sagittal plane runs front to back. (It is easily confused with the frontal plane which runs side to side)

  • Movements which generally occur in this plane are flexion, extension, and hyperextension. Examples would include biceps curls, leg curls, curl-ups, and flexion, extension, and hyperextension from the hip and shoulder.
