Movement in the human body is very complex and involves degrees of primary movement, secondary movement, synergistic movement, and stabilization in some structures to allow movement to occur in others. Most movements are multi-joint movements (for example kicking a ball) and some movements use primarily one joint (for example an arm curl). Establishing a full understanding of the planes and axes for primary movement is a good start to sorting through the complexity.
