Introduction to Kinesiology Definition: Kinesiology is the branch of physiology that studies mechanics and anatomy in relation to human movement. The study of kinesiology has many layers and can be very complex. To start the study of kinesiology and the understanding of human movement, it is necessary to have a clear understanding of:
Once you have this basic knowledge you can start to "interpret" basic human movement. Understanding normal range of motion for a joint, single joint movement, and what movements occur in which plane can help you plan programs which promote muscle balance and optimal function. Advancing your knowledge from the basic movements, joint functions, and muscles to the more complex interactions between multiple joint movement, muscles, and connective tissue, you start to see the bigger picture. With the bigger picture you can start to see the relationships in movement and the causes of dysfunction including muscle weakness, muscle tightness, joint dysfunction, and misalignment. Being able to recognize dysfunction will allow you to then apply proper correction based on the scope of your practice. This Mini Course focuses on the study of Joint Motions, one of the necessary building blocks in the study of kinesiology. |
