The Physiatrist or rehab specialist will look for a confirmed case history of bulbar, spinal or bulbar-spinal polio. He/she will seek changes on the EMG compatible with prior polio. The doctor will consider the onset of weakness in affected or seemingly unaffected muscles and also his patient's experience with fatigue, muscle or joint pain, decreased endurance and function and atrophy of muscles. The physician will also establish exclusion of other conditions with similar symptoms.
