022  Vertical Axis

  • Also referred to as the longitudinal axis.

  • This axis runs straight down through the top of the head and intersects the transverse plane at a right angle. It is easy to visualize because its name, vertical, helps you remember which direction it runs.

  • Movements in the transverse plane rotate around the vertical or longitudinal axis of rotation. An example would be when you rotate the head at the neck as in indicating "no." The movement is in the transverse plane, but the skull and cervical spine are rotating around the vertical axis.
